Parents in Reading

My parents come to Reading to celebrate dad's birthday over a pub lunch.

Following a weekend in Haywards Heath with my brother and family, mum and dad decide to call in to Reading on their way home. As soon as they arrive I waste no time in fixing them up with a visitor parking permit - a ticket was issued a few years previously. Once settled, we have a chat over coffee in the garden.

We jump in to my parent’s new car, which allows me to drink, again giving directions from the back seat through Reading, across Caversham Bridge to the Griffin pub - whose rear garden and car park backs on to the river Thames with swans sat on the river bank.

Due to the warm weather, we decide to choose a table in the garden, finally settling under the ivy covered arbour providing some shade. Dad and I go to the bar for drinks before we settle and browse the menu. With memories of previous lamb dishes, we all order the Moroccan lamb on a bed of couscous, toasted almonds, sultanas, sweet potatoes and sun dried tomatoes with balsamic vinegar. After a short rest we look to the desert menu and choose the Eton mess cheesecake and fruit sorbet for mum, whereby I present dad with his birthday card and gifts (a cute frog and a bottle of sweet dessert wine). We round off the meal with a coffee for dad and beer for me.

The visit concludes when mum and dad drop me off home before driving back to Dorset.
